In the 12th century, Hildegard of Bingen, a German saint and nun, claimed that "lavender water," a mixture of vodka or gin mixed with lavender, would cure migraines. Dioscorides, a Greek physician, wrote in his medical journals that he used lavender as an oral medicine to treat indigestion, sore throat, and headache.
